At the 2012 Academy Awards, it might seem that everything old is new again.
Best picture contenders “The Artist,” “Hugo” and “Midnight in Paris” hark back to the early days of cinema. Billy Crystal will be back for his ninth time as host. And the ceremony hall is expected to be decorated like a classic movie palace on Sunday night.
Yet the Oscar proceedings may break out of the mold as well.

It’s possible that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences may award statuettes to two African American actresses -- Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer -- on the same night. Neither nominee for best song will be performed during the show -- a break with tradition. And on the red carpet, Sacha Baron Cohen may disrupt decorum by showing up as his character from the upcoming film “The Dictator.”
The red carpet is expected to get underway about 3 p.m. Pacific on Sunday, with the ceremony starting at 5:30 p.m. and being televised live on ABC.
