Elton John dressed pretty toned-down -- for Elton John -- when his new ‘The Million Dollar Piano’ show debuted at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas on Wednesday night. He was clad in a black tuxedo jacket that looked like it had ‘just weathered a gold-glitter downpour,’ reports L.A. Times pop music editor Randall Roberts, along with black pants and gold shoes. ‘There were no peacock feathers, and his windshield-wiper spectacles remained in storage. More looks for spring-summer 2012 came down the runways Thursday during Paris Fashion Week. Rick Owens’ collection, above, had a sculptural quality, with long, lean column dresses in monotones. Nina Ricci showed vivid florals and floaty feminine dresses in lavender and red; Anne Demeulemeester stuck with blacks in soft, floaty fabrics; Balmain did pale blues and luxe golds in work shirts paired with minis, the shortest of shorts and rich brocaded jackets. Balenciaga showed loose, almost square jackets with enormous shoulders, dresses broad at shoulder and hem while nipped in at the waist, and more of those short-shorts. [The Cut]
It was Olivier Rousteing’s first showing since taking over as head designer at Balmain, and many critics liked what they saw from the 26-year-old, such as the skirt and blouse combo at left. The collection was inspired by Las Vegas, cowboys and matadors. Without veering far from the usual Balmain aesthetic, it showed Rousteing to be a ‘worthy successor, but one who may develop a promising voice of his own,’ according to Vogue. [Vogue] [The Cut]
Balenciaga’s audience was somewhat distracted, however, when the benches they were sitting on began to collapse, tossing the likes of Carine Roitfeld (former editor of French Vogue) to the floor. After several collapsed -- yes, several -- the audience was ordered to stand for the duration. [Telegraph]
Out magazine came up with a list of 50 notable gay men and asked readers to rank the best- and worst-dressed. Tom Ford came out on top, followed by Adam Lambert and Marc Jacobs. Boy George fared the worst (being just slightly worse-dressed than Perez Hilton, readers said). But Olympic skater Johnny Weir made both lists, placing fourth on both the best- and worst-dressed lists. [Out]
