Last year’s award season saw Kathryn Bigelow break a glass ceiling for female directors, with a Golden Globe nomination and an Oscar win for ‘The Hurt Locker’ filmmaker. This year, no female director is on the short list for best director at the Globes, but Danish director Susanne Bier picked up the mantle with a win for her disaffected-youth drama ‘In a Better World.’

Bier didn’t shy away from the subject backstage, saying she felt the award carried an extra significance because of her gender. ‘I was actually trying to look it up to see how many women were nominated and how many had won, and I had only see a couple,’ she said.
