A peaceful anti-government rally turned into a nightmarish scene Wednesday when supporters of President Hosni Mubarak armed with knives, clubs, rocks and Molotov cocktails stormed into Cairo’s Tahrir Square.
The violence has resulted in at least one death and hundreds of injuries, officials said, and the battle for control of the square continued into the night.
Below are some photos from the square by an American visiting Cairo.
In the top photo, demonstrators watch Mubarak supporters attempt to pass a barricade by the Egyptian Museum near Tahrir Square on Wednesday afternoon.

In this photo and the two below, demonstrators are seen gathering stones and pieces of concrete from the ground. Both sides have been pelting each other with rocks since supporters of the government, some riding horses and camels, marched into the square Wednesday, confronting anti-Mubarak demonstrators who have been camping out for over a week.
