EGYPT: Prosecutor wants Hosni Mubarak’s assets frozen

Egypt’s top prosecutor wants the former president’s assets frozen, state television reported Monday.

The prosecutor, Abdel Meguid Mahmoud, has requested that Egyptian officials freeze the domestic assets of ousted President Hosni Mubarak, 82, and his family, according to state television.

In addition, Mahmoud requested that Egypt’s foreign minister call on other nations to freeze Mubarak’s assets abroad, security officials told the Associated Press. The international freeze would apply to Mubarak, his wife Suzanne, his two sons, Gamal and Alaa, and their wives, the officials told the Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak on the matter.

Earlier this month, Mahmoud froze the assets of several former high-ranking Egyptian officials and banned them from leaving the country.

The former president has submitted a declaration of his wealth to state authorities and maintains that he has no assets abroad, according to statements his legal representative made to the Egyptian state media in recent days. ‘The former President Hosni Mubarak has submitted his final financial statement to the concerned judicial bodies according to the law,’ Mubarak’s legal representative told the MENA news agency Sunday.
