LIBYA: YouTube videos show protests in Tripoli’s Green Square

Videos surfaced on YouTube in recent hours that depict protests in Tripoli’s Green Square, where government loyalists violently descended after Moammar Kadafi’s defiant televised speech Tuesday.

Thousands of Kadafi’s supporters converged in the city’s central Green Square after the speech, wearing green bandannas and brandishing large machetes, the New York Times reported.

The YouTube images appear to depict peaceful gatherings before the crackdown and show protesters burning images of Kadafi in the capital city’s central square.

In this video, protesters renamed Green Square as ‘Benghazi Square’ in honor of the eastern city that has become the cradle of the revolt:

Another video shows protesters building bonfires in Green Square. The narrator says “This is the revolution. This is the revolution in Green Square”:
