LACMA to host Tim Burton panel, but without Tim Burton

‘Tim Burton,’ the popular exhibition devoted to the goth filmmaker, is in the final weeks of its run at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The museum announced Wednesday that it would hold a panel discussion on Oct. 21 that will include some of the filmmaker’s regular collaborators. But Burton himself will be conspicuously absent from the event.
A LACMA spokeswoman said there are no plans for Burton to return to the museum for the remainder of the exhibition’s run. In the past few months, the director has been working on the movies ‘Dark Shadows’ and ‘Frankenweenie.’
The panel, titled ‘Behind the Scenes: Bringing Burton’s World to Life,’ will take place in the Bing Theatre. The event will feature three of Burton’s perennial artistic partners -- composer Danny Elfman, costume designer Colleen Atwood and production designer Rick Heinrichs.
A repeat screening of Burton’s ‘Edward Scissorhands,’ in 70 millimeter, will follow the 7:30 p.m. panel.
The LACMA exhibition opened in May and is scheduled to close on Halloween night, Oct. 31. The show features items from Burton’s films, early projects and student days at CalArts and in Burbank. New York’s Museum of Modern Art originated the exhibition, which has also traveled to Melbourne and Toronto.
The next stop for the show will be the Cinémathèque Française in Paris in 2012.
Burton came to L.A. briefly in May for the exhibition’s opening. The filmmaker signed books, introduced a screening of ‘Ed Wood’ and attended an after-party in his honor. He also sat down with The Times to talk about his movies and career.
