We had breakfast over the weekend at a new spot: the Wood Cafe, at the busy corner of Washington and Inglewood boulevards, straddling Culver City and L.A.

By 9 a.m., a line had formed at the counter, where you order and get a number to have your food delivered to one of the tables or the counter along the walls.

One of my two teenage guests had eggs Benedict, the other a platter with two each of pancakes, eggs, bacon strips and sausage. Breakfast is served all day.

Wood also has croissants, red velvet cake and other baked goods. Blackboard specials included crab cakes Benedict. The waitress didn’t flinch when the diner next to us ordered a veggie omelet with no eggs.

(Fortunately, no Jack Nicholson ‘Five Easy Pieces’ scene ensued.)

Other dishes include poached pears wrapped in smoked salmon served on greens, and a chicken curry salad sandwich. The menu notes that yogurt is sometimes substituted for mayo. There is, however, a pecan chocolate pie to make up for any saved calories.

Owner Demetrios Mavromichalis, who lives in the neighborhood and also owns the nearby Venice Grind coffeehouse, says he buys as much as possible from farmers markets. He wants the Wood to be a ‘regular, steady-Eddie establishment’ with healthful options.

The room is painted orange and white, the dishes are sunny yellow. Shepard Fairey’s Obey prints decorate the walls. And Mavromichalis is planning to have a mural painted on one outdoor wall.

The Wood Cafe, 12000 Washington Blvd., Los Angeles. (310) 915-9663. Open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
