Day of the Dead cooking: Chichén Itzá restaurant’s chef-owner, Gilberto Cetina, is cooking for Hanal Pixan (Día de los Muertos), offering a class on Oct. 28 on how to prepare a special Day of the Dead meal. (The Maya call the day that honors the dead Hanal Pixan.) Class will be followed by a four-course sit-down dinner. On the menu: xec, citrus-jícama salad; mucbil pollo, chicken tamal pie; buñuelos de yuca, cassava fritters with honey; and atole nuevo, hot green corn ‘porridge.’ Mucbil pollo is a dish reserved for Hanal Pixan. It is a link to the ancient Maya, who would bury their dead with corn to sustain them on their journey to the afterlife. Class is from 6 to 9 p.m.; size is limited. $59 (plus tax) includes the class, ingredients and dinner. You can invite a friend to join you for dinner; dinner only is $20 per person. To sign up for the class, call the restaurant.
