‘The Help’: Are you going to see it Wednesday?

The novel was a word-of-mouth phenomenon. Kathryn Stockett racked up 60 different rejection letters before finding a home for ‘The Help’ -- which then turned out to be a huge bestseller.
‘The Help’ has spent 87 weeks on our hardcover bestseller list, and its paperback version, released this spring, has spent every week since comfortably lodged at No. 1 or No. 2. Readers who have embraced the story of pre-Civil Rights era South will get to see it come to life when the movie opens this week.
‘The Help,’ which stars Emma Stone as college grad Skeeter and Viola Davis as the maid Aibileen, opens Wednesday -- unusual for a big-budget film, maybe, but the release night is designed to be perfect for book clubs, which have championed the novel.
But will they champion the film just as much? Are you planning to go see ‘The Help’ Wednesday?
What’s next for Stockett? ‘I’m trying to write this story that takes place in Mississippi during the 1920s,’ she told Entertainment Weekly. For now, however, the movie is keeping her busy. On Monday she appeared on KCRW’s ‘The Business’ with the film’s director, Tate Taylor. The two were old Mississippi friends, and he optioned ‘The Help’ way back when it was just a manuscript; they tell the story of how determined they were that he be the one to make the picture.
