Day has early lead

Mike Day jumped to an early lead in the BMX Trials, laying down a blistering 36.60 in the time trials, the first of five races that will determine who will join Kyle Bennett on the U.S. team for Beijing. Day, of Santa Clarita, is the tallest rider in the field at 6-foot-3 and he used those long legs to his advantage, getting a strong push down the 29-foot starting platform and then sailing over the 40-foot jumps that troubled some other riders. Chino’s Danny Caluag lost at least a half-second, for example, when he landed back wheel-first on a jump on the third straightaway, finishing in 38.47.

Steven Cisar of Altadena was a tick slower than Day at 36.95, followed by Napa’s Donny Robinson at 37.34

Day’s fast time not only earned him the first five points of the competition but it also gives him his choice of start positions for the first moto. Cisar got three points for finishing second, two points ahead of Robinson.
