Ron Calderon drops out of congressional race

State Sen. Ron Calderon (D-Montebello) on Tuesday said he was dropping out of his congressional race against Rep. Linda Sanchez (D-Lakewood) and endorsing his former rival.
In a short written statement, Calderon gave no reason for quitting the race. But he announced his decision the same day that fundraising reports were due and his report showed he had collected a relatively small amount for a competitive race.
Calderon reported raising $79,000, most of it in the latest period, between Oct. 1 and Dec. 31. He had $63,790 in the bank at the end of the reporting period but owed $13,929, documents filed with the Federal Election Commission on Tuesday showed.
Sanchez’s latest reports were not immediately available Tuesday.
Both were running in the newly drawn 38th Congressional District in the San Gabriel Valley area.
The former assemblyman, who was reelected to the state Senate in 2010 and who has another two years remaining in his term, said he was looking forward “to continuing to represent many of the communities in this congressional district “ and to working with Sanchez “to champion local job creation and economic development.”
