Jerry Brown makes personal appeal for workers’ compensation overhaul

Los Angeles Times business reporter Marc Lifsher reported on our Money & Co. blog that Gov. Jerry Brown is personally applying pressure on lawmakers to approve an overhaul of California’s $17-billion workers’ compensation insurance program in the waning hours of the Legislative session.

After a series of meetings Friday with Brown and top aides, Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg, who had been noncommittal on the measure, emerged to declare that ‘I am now an advocate.’

The California Chamber of Commerce is also on board, but trial lawyers are continuing to fight the measure.

Lifsher reported that the bill has made a ‘spectacular turnaround’ over the last 24 hours.

Just Thursday night, several senators had emerged from a closed-door caucus meeting to declare it dead.
