Angels & Airwaves, Jayhawks, other Music Box gigs rescheduled

Those planning on a quick reopening for Hollywood’s Music Box can now officially consider their hopes dashed. Today promoter Goldenvoice began rescheduling many of its upcoming concerts slated for the space, beginning with a sold-out date from Blink-182 offshoots Angels & Airwaves, which has been moved up from Jan. 26 to Jan. 23 to the nearby Avalon.
The Angels & Airwaves gig is one of four upcoming Goldenvoice gigs that was originally slated for the Music Box and has now been relocated. A Feb. 2 date for alt-country forebears the Jayhawks has also been shifted to the Avalon, and Dr. Dog’s Feb. 10 appearance has been relocated to downtown theater the Orpheum. Finally, noise-rockers Sleigh Bells, whose Feb. 21 Music Box date went on sale last week, will now play at the Mayan Theater downtown.
Not all Music Box dates have yet been moved to other venues. Those scheduled for March, such as dates with Nada Surf, Lucero and the Cults, are still slated for the Music Box. Cults booking agent Tom Windish, however, has already told Pop & Hiss that he has a backup venue is in place.
In moving Angels & Airwaves from the Music Box to the Avalon, some extra tickets have been found for the previously sold-out show. According to a statement from the promoter, a ‘limited number’ of tickets will go on sale Wednesday at 10 a.m. All Music Box tickets will be honored, which also holds true for other concerts referenced in this post.
Those looking for some good news surrounding the sudden and unexpected closure of the Music Box can take solace in the fact that craft beer bar/restaurant Blue Palms Brewhouse has been allowed to remain open — at least for a few more weeks. Blue Palms, which was on the same lease as the Music Box, was evicted in early January along with the venue operators.
Property records list the owner of the Henry Fonda, which houses the Music Box and Blue Palms, as New York resident Leslie Blumberg, whom Pop & Hiss has been unable to reach. Calls to the local leasing firm listed on the records, Hutchinson & Bloodgood LLP, have not been returned. Additionally, Thaddeus Smith, who ran the Music Box, located just west of the intersection of Hollywood Boulevard and Gower Street, has not responded to multiple requests for comment.
