We did get at least one e-mail this morning wondering why we didn’t give more attention in the sports section to the closing of Yankee Stadium.

Actually, we gave it centerpiece treatment Sunday, on the day of the Yankees’ final game in the stadium, and we had extensive coverage of the stadium’s closing on the day of this season’s All-Star game in New York.

We figured that was enough for a stadium 3,000 miles away from Los Angeles.

But in case you want more, you should this story from today’s Newsday on the Yankees celebration. Note how the Yankees failed to make any mention of Joe Torre. Roger Clemens too.

Considering all the sports action Sunday, we chose to devote much of our baseball space to the Dodgers’ game against the Giants. The Dodgers lost, 1-0, dropped two of three games against the Giants at Chavez Ravine and enabled Arizona to gain two games in the NL West standings. I hate to say we told you so, but we did in Steve Springer’s excellent story Friday about how the Giants and Dodgers have played spoilers for each other.

The Dodgers and Giants play in the final three games of the regular season next weekend, in San Francisco. I would advise the Dodgers to do the best they can to take that magic number down to one in their three games at home against the Padres before they go north. Or else they might go south.
