Hollywood’s Manny Gamburyan appeared clearly undersized in his Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight match against Brazil’s Thiago Tavares (18-3), who beat Gamburyan by pounding him with back-handed fists on the ground in the first round and overwhelming the Southern California product by scores of 29-28 on all three judges’ scorecards.
San Jose’s Jon Fitch (22-3) was in no way affected by the comical entrance of his welterweight opponent, Akihiro Gono of Tokyo, who dressed in a shimmering silver, Beyonce-like mini-skirt and a black wig, accompanied by two similarly dressed cornermen dancing in unison.
Fitch entered with a grim face under a black MMA hoodie, with Johnny Cash music blaring. Masculinity won out, 30-27, on all three scorecards as Fitch dominated on the ground.
No one immediately claimed the $20,000 submission bonus UFC offered all fighters. The first three fights were split decisions won by welterweight Dan Cramer over Matt Arroyo, by light-heavyweight Jake O’Brien over Sacramento’s Christian Wellisch, and by UFC newcomer John Howard in a welterweight bout against Chris Wilson.
