Left-hander Tyler Matzek of Mission Viejo Capistrano Valley might have slipped a little bit in being drafted No. 11 by the Colorado Rockies over concerns about how much money it will take to sign him, but he said Tuesday, ‘I’m just excited to be selected by the Rockies. I know it’s a good organization.’

Matzek made it clear there’s some work to be done. ‘This is the start of the business side,’ he said.

Matzek signed with Oregon, leaving the college option available if an agreement is not reached with the Rockies.

Matzek said, ‘I did all I could do,’ regarding his sensational senior season in which he emerged as the top player in Southern California after throwing 18 1/3 scoreless innings during the Southern Section Division I playoffs and hitting a home run in the championship game at Angel Stadium won by Capistrano Valley, 1-0.

‘It showed my true colors,’ he said of his playoff performance.
