The suspense is over. Pitcher Stephen Strasburg (above) has been selected No. 1 in baseball’s amateur draft, going to the Washington Nationals.
He was 13-1 with 195 strikeouts and a 1.32 earned-run average at San Diego State. Now comes the negotiating game between the Nationals and Strasburg’s advisor, Scott Boras.
Dustin Ackley, an outfielder from North Carolina, was taken No. 2 by the Seattle Mariners. Donovan Tate, an outfielder from Cartersville, Ga., was picked No. 3 by the San Diego Padres. Catcher Tony Sanchez from Boston College went No. 4 to the Pittsburgh Pirates.
