In a season peppered with accolades, the Sol solidified its dominance in Women’s Professional Soccer by becoming the first team in the league’s inaugural season to clinch a playoff berth.

The Sol recorded a 4-0 victory Saturday against the visiting Chicago Red Stars, the worst club in the seven-team WPS. When St. Louis Athletica edged Sky Blue FC, 2-1, on Sunday, it put the Sol in the four-team postseason.

If the Sol (10-1-4) holds on to the league’s best record, its home field (the Home Depot Center) would be the site of the WPS title match on Aug. 22.

Until then, the Sol’s most challenging obstacle continues to be its regular-season finale Aug. 9 against the Boston Breakers, who trail the Sol (34 points) in the standings with a 5-4-3 record (18 points).

The Breakers are responsible for the Sol’s lone loss on May 2.

In that game, the Breakers posted consecutive goals – in the second and 55th minute – which no other team has accomplished. Boston’s 2-1 victory also marked the most goals by an opponent.

Eight days later, the teams tied, 0-0, at the Home Depot Center.

The Sol will play four of its last five games on the road. Its last home match is July 8 against Athletica.
