Hometown favorite Sam Querrey, who is ranked No. 32 in the world, had quite the scare from Ryan Sweeting, a tennis player so anonymous he only merits a blank head on the Assn. of Tennis Professionals’ website because it must have no photo. Sweeting, 22, is ranked No. 155 in the world and pushed Querrey, a 21-year-old from Thousand Oaks, all the way through three sets before losing 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3 this afternoon at the L.A. Open at UCLA.
The tournament’s fourth-ranked player also had a serious test. Dudi Sela, a 5-foot-9, 147-pounder who can disappear if he stands behind the likes of the 6-foot-6 Querrey, beat Robert Kendrick 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.
Still to come tonight in the ATP tour stop -- No. 2 seed Mardy Fish against wild card invitee Chris Guccione and a Legends match between Michael Chang and Stefan Edberg, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
