Ducks Coach Randy Carlyle jettisoned his ‘you win and you’re in’ goaltender rotation for Tuesday’s game against the Dallas Stars, going with Jean-Sebastien Giguere again despite a 4-3 shootout loss to Ottawa on Sunday.
A run of one-goal losses had turned the goaltending rotation into a revolving door. But Giguere has generally played well, has better statistics than Jonas Hiller, and perhaps most important, was in goal for the Ducks’ three-game winning streak last month.
Carlyle, caught between sticking to the plan and making a decision based on his assessment of whether Giguere or Hiller was playing better, went with his gut.
The early results didn’t pay dividends: The Ducks trailed, 2-0, after the first period, but it was hard to hang it all on Giguere. The first goal came on a power play, and the second on a two-on-one rush.
