Galaxy midfielder David Beckham may not have been able to sign with Tottenham on loan during the MLS off-season, but he sure seems to be spending a lot of time over there.
Beckham has been training with the Spurs since January but was expected to return to the U.S. this week. Instead, he will remain with Tottenham until Feb. 22 before joining his Galaxy teammates for preseason training Feb. 24, a date Beckham had already announced on his website last Thursday.
The Galaxy opened camp last week, but the team should be used to working without Beckham, who has played in 57 of a possible 115 regular-season and playoff games for Los Angeles during the first four years of his five-year contract with MLS.
During that time, Beckham played 55 games for England and on loan with AC Milan. He also ruptured his left Achilles’ tendon while playing with AC Milan and missed most of the 2010 MLS season.
‘Every year we’ve spent significant time without David, whether it’s been injuries or he’s been away,” Galaxy forward Landon Donovan said on the Galaxy website last week. “This team knows how to gel quickly and David conversely does a good job of coming into the team. The expectation is to have him back relatively soon.”
While the Spurs and Galaxy weren’t able to work out a loan agreement for Beckham -- the Galaxy wanted to be adequately compensated if another injury caused him to again be sidelined for much of the year -- Tottenham Manager Harry Redknapp said last week he could try to sign Beckham again after his Galaxy contract expires in November.
