USC football: Keary Colbert will attempt to revive NFL career

Keary Colbert was thought to be a front-runner for a vacant receivers coach position on Lane Kiffin’s coaching staff at USC.

But Colbert has other plans.

The former Trojans receiver, who worked as a graduate assistant coaching Trojans tight ends in 2010, is leaving the staff in an attempt to revive his NFL career.

Colbert, 28. was a second-round draft pick by the Carolina Panthers in 2004 and had a career-best 47 receptions for 754 yards and five touchdowns as a rookie. He played three more seasons with the team and then spent the 2008 season with Seattle, Detroit and Denver. In 2009, he played briefly for the UFL’s Florida Tuskers.

‘After spending a year working with the tight ends at USC as a graduate assistant, it ignited my passion and fire to compete at the highest level,’ Colbert said in a statement. ‘I’ve been training and getting myself physically prepared to make a comeback in the NFL. I plan to be a great veteran addition to any team’s wide receiver corps.’
