An update on the progress of the NHL draft:
The Kings previously traded their first-round pick to Edmonton in the Dustin Penner deal. With that pick, the Oilers took defenseman Oscar Klefbom, a 6-foot-4 Swede.
The Ducks were scheduled to pick 22nd but traded that pick to Toronto for the 30th and 39th picks in this year’s draft. The Maple Leafs used the 22nd pick to select right wing Tyler Biggs from the U.S. national team development program.
The Kings’ deal to send Ryan Smyth to Edmonton for a fourth-round pick and injured forward Gilbert Brule remains on hold. The Kings have said no deal is in place and that details need to be ironed out, though they wouldn’t be specific.
The San Jose Sharks made a splash by trading winger Devin Setoguchi, 2010 first-round pick Charlie Coyle and the 28th pick in the draft for Minnesota defenseman Brent Burns and a second-round pick in 2012. The Sharks were looking to upgrade their defense and got a good one. Also, the Chicago Blackhawks traded winger Troy Brouwer to Washington for the Capitals’ first-round pick, No. 26 overall.
