Bengals: Carson Palmer to retire

Cincinnati quarterback Carson Palmer has decided to retire instead of returning to the Bengals, Coach Marvin Lewis said Tuesday.

In a news conference to answer questions heading into to training camp, Lewis said that the Bengals will pursue a veteran quarterback to help ease the transition to the pros for rookie Andy Dalton. Palmer’s brother, Jordan, is also competing for the starting quarterback job.

Bengals owner Mike Brown has made it clear that Carson Palmer will play for the Bengals this season or no one.

Palmer, the Heisman Trophy winner from USC and No. 1 overall pick in 2003, is walking away from a lot of money if he indeed retires. He is scheduled to make $11.5 million in salary for the next two seasons, $13 million in 2013, and $14 million in 2014.
