When the Yankees were eliminated Thursday, Bud Selig may have lost his chance at achieving television ratings gold, a dismal prospect considering that last year’s World Series between the Texas Rangers and the San Francisco Giants tied the record for the lowest marks in league history.

The teams with enough cross-country appeal to boost ratings are the Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Dodgers and Chicago Cubs. With each of them out of contention, the Philadelphia Phillies and the Rangers are the league’s best hope.

That may not be a good sign. (The Phillies were in the World Series in 2008, the season that tied last year for the poorest ratings.)

Selig still has hope for the Milwaukee Brewers. Not because of their ratings.

He used to own the team.
