Floyd Mayweather avoids jail time till June, free for spring fight

A Nevada judge Friday delayed Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s sentence for a domestic violence conviction, thus freeing the undefeated boxing champion to go ahead with a possible fight in May.

Mayweather, 34, pleaded guilty last month to a reduced battery domestic violence charge and no contest to two harassment charges in a case involving an attack in September 2010 on his ex-girlfriend. He was supposed to begin serving a 90-day jail sentence Friday.

But a judge said she considered Mayweather’s contractual obligations to the fight set for May 5 in Las Vegas against an as-yet unnamed opponent.

What is unclear is whether Mayweather’s postponed jail time will open the way for a mega-fight this spring with Manny Pacquiao.
