The modern piggy bank doesn’t come with a cute curly tail, it comes with a USB cord.

The interactive money box, called Ekomini ($39.99), is a fun toy created to teach young kids about saving money.
The toy is a treasure chest that plugs into your child’s computer.

When your child drops a coin through the slot, the box recognizes the denomination and sends the number to the computer, which keeps a running total. Kids can use the computer to check their balance.

Say your daughter wants to save up for a new Barbie Dream House ($159.99). The Ekomini will help her figure out how much she needs to stow away every week.

The Ekomini also allows you to access a website featuring a virtual town called Ekominiville populated by characters who can help kids manage their money. Koni, for example, helps your child save up for something she wants by helping him distinguish between needs and wants, while Mike shows your child how to make even more money with the money she saves.

Although Ekomini doesn’t teach kids how to avoid high-interest loans, buy houses they can’t afford or avoid foreclosure, it may teach them the financial basics necessary to avoid those situations.
