Authorities say that LAPD Dets. Al Marengo and Jamie Bennett have solved downtown L.A.’s only murder case this year, the stabbing homicide May 13 of 43-year-old Raymond Gray, a black man, in a dark alley near the intersection of 8th and Main streets. Gray was a Skid Row dweller who collected cans and had a history of drug offenses--the sort of homicide victim who typically gets little attention from the press or public. Arrested in the case was Diego Cardona, 23, a Latino man, who police said was a documented gang member. Cardona is believed by investigators to have acted with others, and the investigation continues. Police ask anyone with information on the case to call (213) 972-1249.
