Boys’ soccer: South East’s season can turn on showdowns

The South East boys’ soccer team is in its third year of existence, and the Jaguars are in the hunt for the Eastern League championship.

Winning that title could come down to South East’s next two games, against city rival South Gate on Friday and against Bell on Monday.

The teams are this close in the Eastern standings. Both Bell and South East are 5-1-1 in league play, while South Gate is 5-2-1. Bell has beaten South Gate twice, including Wednesday’s 5-4 road victory, and South East once. South East also has a win over South Gate.

South East Coach Felipe Bernal said Bell ‘is the strongest team I’ve seen in a while.’ But there is no chance the Jaguars are looking ahead. ‘South Gate is our cross-town rival. And if you lose to your rival, you have to hear about it all year. We’ve won the last three games, and want to keep it going.’
