Girls’ water polo: Warren savors its first win over Downey

It’s been a long time coming for Warren, but the Bears finally own bragging rights over their crosstown rivals.

Melissa Cedarholm and Amber Smith each scored three goals and goalie Krityn Casas had 13 saves and five steals on Thursday as host Warren triumphed, 8-7, to claim its first victory over Downey in the program’s seven-year history.

Warren leveled its San Gabriel Valley League record at 2-2 despite spirited efforts by Downey’s Karen Aguirre and Ariana Weisenberger, who combined to score all of the Vikings’ goals.

In other pool action Thursday...

Julia Botting netted four goals and Elisabeth Leoni, Heidi Carlson and Brooke Carpenter each added three as Louisville splashed by Mission League adversary Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, 15-5, at Pierce College. Stef Pastore made 12 saves to spark the Wildcats’ win.

Out in Ventura County, Breanna Johnson’s three goals led Royal past Westlake in a Marmonte League match.
