Boys’ basketball: Crespi upsets Mater Dei

Yes, Mater Dei’s Wear twins, David and Travis, were absent. And Coach Gary McKnight was a no-show.

But Crespi was still feeling good Wednesday night after its 73-62 victory over Mater Dei in the Fairfax tournament.

Freshman Michael Avery scored 12 points and sparked an 18-2 run in the second half for the Celts, who will face Santa Monica in a quarterfinal game Thursday at 8:30 p.m.

Mater Dei had Andy Brown and Gary Franklin on the court but lacked energy in falling behind by 15 points in the second half.

Guard Blake Stanton turned in a strong performance for Crespi, scoring 16 points. Gabe Borboa added 16 points.
