Taft pulled out a 54-52 victory over Compton Dominguez Tuesday night in a Division I Southern California Regional quarterfinal at Taft.

The big baskets were contributed by seniors Justin Hawkins and Terran Carter. Hawkins made a three-pointer with 2:39 left to give Taft a 51-48 lead. With 29 seconds left, Carter made a turnaround bank shot for a 53-49 lead. Carter finished with 16 points and 13 rebounds.

Dominguez opened a 15-0 lead at the outset but might have lost the game at the end of the second quarter when a technical foul on Norvelle Pelle helped Taft go from 30-21 to 30-27 at halftime by turning it into a six-point play.

Taft committed turnovers twice in the final two minutes while trying to protect a three-point lead, but Dominguez made just one of six free throws in the fourth quarter. Keala King finished with 17 points for Dominguez.
