Crenshaw has three freshman starters who made major contributions Monday in helping the Cougars take over first place in the Coliseum League with a 9-3 victory over Fremont.
First baseman Keymon Thomas and catcher Skyler Blocker each had two hits. Third baseman Ron Miller had a two-run double. All are freshmen.
They combined with senior Kenji Corbisiero, who had three hits and threw a six-hitter. Crenshaw improved to 8-4 and 7-0 in league. Fremont dropped to 11-2 and 8-1.
Crenshaw is in City Section Division II this season. The City has revamped its playoff format, leaving most of the San Fernandoo Valley teams in Division I and creating a championship opportunity for everyone else.
I was impressed by the way both teams played with few errors. Neither is ready to beat a top Valley team, but both schools are showing improvement. Fremont had its own freshman standout in center fielder Carlos Garcia, who had a double and single, making him 22 for 39 on the season.
