Girls’ basketball: Santa Clara 43, St. Bernard 35 at end of third quarter

After trailing 26-20 at halftime, top-seeded Playa Del Rey St. Bernard opened the third quarter with seven unanswered points to take a 27-26 lead with 7:05 left in the quarter.

But second-seeded Oxnard Santa Clara responded with a 9-1 run of its own to retake a sizable lead, and the Saints held on to finish the third quarter ahead, 43-35, in the Southern Section Division 5AA championship on Saturday at Santa Ana Mater Dei.
