Football: Long Beach Poly dominates in winning Saugus tourney

After two weeks of summer seven-on-seven football action, Long Beach Poly is 13-0 and showing no signs of being challenged.
On Saturday night in the championship game of the 24-team Saugus tournament, the Jackrabbits routed Westlake Village Westlake, 36-16, with the defense making three interceptions. Josiah Blandin and John Smith each had two touchdown catches.
Linebacker Salamo Fiso had three interceptions in the final two games. Safety David Price Jr. had an interception in the final and was considered Poly’s top player over two days. Quarterbacks Chaiyse Hales and Nicholas Pope performed well. The Jackrabbits defeated Simi Valley Royal in the semifinals and routed Westlake Village Oaks Christian in the quarterfinals. Westlake defeated Thousand Oaks in the semifinals. Middle linebacker David Ortiz had a strong tournament for Westlake.
‘That’s as good a seven-on-seven team as I’ve seen,’ Oaks Christian Coach Bill Redell said of Poly.
Royal was a surprise over the two days, led by 6-foot-6 tight end Garrett Parkinson.
West Hills Chaminade defeated Valencia to win the consolation championship.
