The City Section has declared Santa Ana Mater Dei transfer Shaqquan Aaron ineligible this season at Woodland Hills Taft based on CIF transfer rules, Commissioner Barbara Fiege said Monday.

Aaron is a sophomore who played for new Taft Coach Jason Hart as an eighth-grader. He can appeal the decision. He is eligible to play junior varsity.

[Updated 6:45 p.m.]‘We’re disappointed in the decision and will be seeking clarification,’ assistant principal Robert Clarke said. ‘We don’t know exactly what it was.’

Taft is still awaiting word if Compton transfer Anthony January will be declared eligible.

Also uncertain is the eligibility of Fairfax senior guard Brendyn Taylor. Last season, Taylor played in seven games after being granted a hardship waiver before he was declared ineligible.

Official practice began on Monday, and Taylor cannot practice with Fairfax, Fiege said.

Taylor is still trying to regain his eligibility, and no final decision has been announced.
