In four years, Tuesday’s opening day of the week-long Crespi tournament may or may not be remembered as the moment 6-foot-10 freshman center Trevor Stanback made his debut for West Hills Chaminade.
He scored 12 points in a 72-53 loss to Brentwood. The Eagles seemed as if they didn’t know what to do with someone his size, and it’s going to take all summer for teammates to get comfortable, particularly 6-8 Jack Williams, who’s going to have to figure out how to play with a big man in the middle.
But Stanback, who turned 14 a couple months ago, is going to bring lots of attention to the Eagles. He’s a straight-A student, wears size 16 shoes, can run up and down the court, has athleticism and can make a jumper from free-throw range. He’s the younger brother of former Fairfax standout Chace Stanback and shoots his jumper just like his brother. He has a sister, Devin, who will be a 6-2 junior at Chaminade, and he has a 6-2 younger brother, Kyle, who’s only in the fifth grade and wears size 14 shoes.
Brentwood was finally at full strength, and its two returning standouts, Tra Holder and Leland King, were fabulous, each scoring 21 points.
Loyola’s Trey Mason had 25 points and made seven three-pointers in a victory over Camarillo. West Ranch looked very good in a win over Orange Lutheran.
