NANCARROW: COMPLETE STUDIES FOR PLAYER PIANO, VOL. 4. 1750 Arch Records S-1798. Nancarrow’s mode is delight in his own invention. These “Studies for Player Piano,” for which the composer prepares piano rolls and plays them on two synchronized player pianos, are cleanly written miniatures. They possess wit and charm, if little poignancy; they intrigue rather than touch the listener. Yet they satisfy because they are so roundly constructed. Though this is Volume 4, it is still a fine introduction to Nancarrow’s vigorous imagination.
