Lots of Social Action Planned for YMCA Silent Auction

The Board of Directors of the YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles is aiming for $100,000 with its first auction Saturday night at the Bonaventure Hotel. The money (and we’re hoping they’ll go over the goal) will be used to expand the YMCA’s After School Child-Care program (it currently serves 3,000 children daily), to train YMCA child-care directors and counselors, to help Y branches acquire new neighborhood sites and to provide scholarships for youngsters unable to pay the Y fees.

The silent auction begins at 6 p.m. Then comes dinner. And finally the live action. Peter McCoy, formerly president of Sotheby’s on the West Coast and former chief of staff for First Lady Nancy Reagan, will conduct the auction, which will have up for grabs such items as a 2-year-old purebred Arabian filly (who knows, she may just prance in for the see and buy); dinners and luncheons at such good fare spots as Michael’s in Santa Monica, the Rangoon Racquet Club (this one also includes stretch limo transportation to and from), the Fiasco at Marina del Rey, El Paseo Inn on Olvera Street and the Red Onion restaurants; gift certificates for shopping at Ralph’s plus the usual array of etchings and paintings and appliances and television sets.

Ann Hinchliffe, wife of YMCA board chairman Stephen F. Hinchliffe Jr. is chairing the activities with vice chairmen Jane Baker, Lucy McBain, Marilyn Hudson and Nancy Munger. Also helping on the party plans are Robin Barker, Alyce Block, Marcia Cannell, Dianne Ouellet, Lorna Reed and Roy and Beth Stevens.

The Social Scramble: Nancy Sinatra Lambert was at Aida Grey’s Salon de Beaute the other day with daughters A.J. and Amanda. The idea was to have Miss Grey teach the girls the basics of good skin care. They loved it. “She did the same for me,” said Frank Sinatra’s firstborn (“Nancy With the Laughing Face” was written for her, “when I was their age.”). Also being beautified that day--Mrs. Harvey Silbert, Mrs. Happy Franklin recovering from the flu (who isn’t these days) and Barbara Trister.

Shipping tycoon C. C. Tung and his wife Harriet hosted a little dinner party the other night in New York. Seated around the table in Peter Pang’s new Shangri-la Pavilion on the East Side were Eric Ho who is working for Bill Blass; King and Sylvia Wu; Diane Chen, a Roche veep; designer Bobby To and book editor Beverly Loo.

Marcia and Larry Israel were back home (it’s a short stay for Marcia who leaves for Tokyo, Osaka and Hong Kong over the weekend) and Midge and Bob Clark invited some friends to a “welcome home” dinner. There were about 20 good pals around to enjoy the lobster bisque and veal birds and cold orange souffle with raspberry sauce--Billie and Roger Converse, Lady and Dr. Bill Dodge, Mary and Brad Jones, the Henry Bergers, Jerry and Virginia Oppenheimer, Eric and Frances Skipsey, John and Alice Hessell, Carl Neubert and Sherry Sexton.

Right after Gypsy singer Grusha’s concert at the Wilshire Ebell, Kay Brown took some friends back to her mother’s home. Pianist Michael Raine (an attractive blonde lass) and Hungarian Paul Galfy took turns on the grand piano; concert guitarist and vocalist Peter Landerman (he grew up in South America and Spain) got the crowd clapping as he played more Gypsy melodies; Sylvia Dillon sang Russian songs she’d learned at her grandmother’s knee.
