Production of Australia’s Argyle Diamonds Declines

SYDNEY, Australia — Diamonds recovered from Western Australia’s Argyle Diamond Mine declined to 5.7 million carats in 1984 from 6.2 million carats the year before, CRA Ltd. said.
CRA Ltd., which has 57% control of the mine, said the decline in overall ore grade reflected the expected depletion of the higher grade material near the surface.
When in full production, the mine is expected to yield 25 million carats a year, with a projected minimum life of 20 years.
