The third annual Hammer Prize will be shared by one of the United States’ leading AIDs researchers and three Japanese scientists for showing that T-cell leukemia is caused by a virus, Dr. Armand Hammer, chairman of Occidental Petroleum, announced in Los Angeles. Dr. Robert C. Gallo, chief of the National Cancer Institute’s tumor cell laboratory, will receive $50,000, and the other half of the prize will be shared by Yorio Hinuma, Isao Miyoshi and Kiyoshi Takatsuki.
