NBA Roundup : Laimbeer, Pistons Put End to Bucks’ Win Streak, 113-111
Bill Laimbeer scored six points in overtime, including the game-winning shot with 42 seconds left, and the Detroit Pistons snapped the Milwaukee Bucks’ 11-game winning streak with a 113-111 victory at Milwaukee.
The Pistons moved to within three games of the Bucks in the Central Division with their third straight win.
Laimbeer, who had 32 points, scored the first four points of overtime to give the Pistons a 107-103 lead. The Bucks tied it, 111-111, on Sidney Moncrief’s basket with 55 seconds to go.
After Laimbeer’s put Detroit ahead, the Bucks had a turnover and missed four shots in the final seconds.
Milwaukee trailed, 87-78, early in the fourth quarter but scored 12 straight points to get back into the game. The lead changed hands several times in the stretch, and Milwaukee’s Terry Cummings hit a jumper with 13 seconds left to send the game into overtime.
Paul Pressey scored 27 points for Milwaukee, and Cummings and Moncrief added 26 each. John Long added 22 points for the Pistons.
Philadelphia 106, Atlanta 92--Julius Erving scored 23 points and took over fourth place on pro basketball’s all-time scoring list as the 76ers climbed back to within one game of Boston in the Atlantic Division by beating the Hawks at Philadelphia.
Erving made two free throws with 2:51 left in the game to increase his career total to 27,113, passing Denver’s Dan Issel. Ahead of Erving are all-time leader Kareem Abdul-Jabaar, Wilt Chamberlain and Elvin Hayes.
Moses Malone had 18 points and 18 rebounds for Philadelphia and Charles Barkley scored 17 points. Wilkins scored 25 points for Atlanta.
Cleveland 121, Washington 112--John Bagley scored a career-high 35 points and World B. Free added 22 as the Cavaliers climbed out of the Central Division cellar by beating the Bullets at Landover, Md.
The Cavaliers, who lost 19 of their first 21 games, have won 13 of their last 26.
Washington, playing without injured starters Jeff Ruland and Cliff Robinson, lost its third straight game despite getting a career-high 34 points from guard Jeff Malone and 23 points from Greg Ballard.
San Antonio 114, Golden State 109--George Gervin scored five of his 27 points in overtime to lead the Spurs past the Warriors at San Antonio.
The Warriors, who broke a 16-game losing streak by beating New York Sunday night, trailed by 25 points late in the third period, but rallied to tie the score, 105-105, and force the overtime on a rebound basket by Lester Conner with six seconds left.
Artis Gilmore had 25 points, 13 rebounds and a season-high 10 blocked shots for the Spurs. Eric (Sleepy) Floyd had 27 points for the Warriors.
