A Mexican couple facing deportation and the loss of a Kansas City house that they had won in a drawing would be allowed to stay in the United States with “permanent residence status” under legislation introduced by Sen. Thomas F. Eagleton (D-Mo.). Jose and Silvia Carmona, who have four children, must leave the country by Feb. 23 unless Congress acts. The children, born in America, are U.S. citizens. Immigration officials discovered the Carmonas, who have lived illegally in this country since 1977, after a story and photograph appeared in the Kansas City Times last year explaining how they won a house in a church charity drawing.
