Libya freed four Britons held hostage since the two countries severed diplomatic relations 10 months ago over the slaying of a British policewoman outside the Libyan Embassy in London. Robin Plummer, 32, and Malcolm Anderson, 27, both engineers, and Alan Russell, 48, and Michael Berdinner, 52, both teachers, were released after months of mediation and four trips to Libya by Terry Waite, the personal envoy of Robert A.K. Runcie, the Archbishop of Canterbury. The men were held in connection with charges ranging from a minor traffic violation to smuggling state secrets.
