Pomona No-Hits Chapman in Sweep
Rhonda Wheatley pitched a no-hitter in the first game and Cal Poly Pomona scored six runs in the fourth inning of the second game as the Broncos swept a season-opening doubleheader from Chapman College Tuesday at Pomona.
Pomona won, 1-0 and 9-1.
Wheatley struck out three and walked one and was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score the run in Pomona’s first win. Chapman pitcher Cathy Fisher allowed only three hits, but suffered the loss.
Donna McElrea, a transfer from Cal State Fullerton, hit a grand slam in the fourth inning and Jamie McCandlish hit a three-run homer in the third to lead the Broncos in the nightcap. Susan Claypool pitched the first five innings for Pomona and got the win.
