‘Luxury Tax’

Rather than a freeze on Social Security benefits, which would impose a hardship on many elderly and disabled, why not a substantial luxury tax on non-essential items (similar to the law enacted during World War II) such as jewelry, furs, higher-priced autos, etc.?

Such a tax would not only bring in additional revenue, it would also tax those individuals who do not report a substantial amount of their income and also those who through various loopholes manage to escape paying taxes altogether.
