Mandlikova and Lloyd Move Into Final Round at Oakland

Hana Mandlikova will defend her title against Chris Evert Lloyd today in a $150,000 tournament at Oakland.

Mandlikova, who is seeded No. 6, eliminated fellow Czechoslovakian Helena Sukova, 6-4, 6-0, while Lloyd, who is seeded No. 1, defeated Zina Garrison, 6-3, 6-2.

Mandlikova’s victory was her seventh straight over Sukova, who has never beaten her.

“She tried everything today,” Mandlikova said. “She stayed back, then tried to come in early. She had a little bit of a chance when I lost my serve (in the ninth game of the first set), but she made no problems for me.”

Garrison, however, had her chances against the 30-year-old Lloyd, but she couldn’t capitalize on them consistently.

The eighth game of the first set went to deuce seven times before Lloyd managed to hold serve. She then broke the service of the 21-year-old Garrison to win the set.

Garrison bounced back to break Lloyd’s service in the first game of the second set. But the world’s No. 2 player reeled off the next four games and coasted to victory.

“Zina definitely played a level above the two previous matches we had,” Lloyd said. “She hit the ball hard, moved well and stretched me. She disguised her forehand and backhand very well.”

Top-seeded Anders Jarryd of Sweden and third-seeded Kevin Curren of South Africa moved into the final of a $125,000 Grand Prix tournament at Toronto.

Jarryd came from behind to defeat Poland’s Wojtek Fibak, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, in one semifinal match, and Curren beat second-seeded Eliot Teltscher, 6-3, 6-3, in the other.

It was the first time that Curren had beaten Teltscher in five meetings.
