Man Seized After 60-Mile Chase
An Oxnard man was arrested early today after he tried to swim away from authorities at the Santa Monica Municipal Pier following a 60-mile car chase, sheriff’s deputies said.
Lt. Ray Gonzales said deputies began pursuing a swerving car, later found to be stolen, in Malibu at 2:40 a.m. After leading authorities at speeds of 90 m.p.h. for more than 40 minutes, Keith Lee Timmons, 20, crashed the car through a barrier at the Santa Monica pier, got out and dove into the ocean, Gonzales said. After 15 minutes, the suspect swam ashore and was arrested on suspicion of grand theft auto by waiting California Highway Patrol officers.
