An American scholar was expelled early this month by Kenyan authorities who suspected him of interfering in local politics, Western sources said in Nairobi. Michael Schatzberg, a political scientist with the Johns Hopkins School for Advanced International Studies, was doing a study of African civil servants. He reportedly had permission to conduct research on patterns of authority in Eldoret, a highlands town west of the Rift Valley, and planned to examine the training of civil servants and their perception of their roles.
